Eviction Procedures in Houston & Greater Houston

When hard times hit.  No one ever wants to find them-self in a court house under eviction.  But please no that there are things you can do to slow down the process and get yourself a little more time.

Beware of people in the courtroom that promise to help you for a couple hundred dollars.  This is something you can do yourself for free.

Appealing as pauper
If you are unable to post an appeal or cash bond, and pay court costs, you still may appeal your eviction case to county court by filing an affidavit of inability and appeal the case as a pauper. The deadline for filing the affidavit is the same as appealing using an appeal or cash bond (five days from the judgment counting weekends).
If the court accepts your affidavit and the landlord does not challenge it, then you can appeal the case without posting a bond or paying costs. However, a landlord can file a protest with the J.P. court and require you to attend a hearing to provide testimony of your financial situation. If the court agrees with your landlord, the judge may require you to post a bond and pay costs to appeal the eviction (this decision can independently be appealed to the county court).
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are appealing an eviction case that was filed because of nonpayment of rent and you are appealing as a pauper by filing an affidavit of inability, then within five days of filing your affidavit you must deposit one rental payment with the J.P. court, and in the future continue to pay regular rental payments into the county court registry within five days of the due date under the lease. If you do not comply, you could be removed from the premises while your appeal is pending.

Don't get scammed by tricky people saying than can get you an extension.  Unless you can afford an attorney I recommend that you Google the procedure for eviction in Texas.

Dinosaurs! Houston Zoo May 9th,2012

Dinosaur. Few other words conjure up images of of such strength and power. Thousands of years ago, the huge monsters didn’t just walk the Earth, they ruled it. Now, they’re making a repeat appearance in the Museum District at “Dinosaurs! at the Houston Zoo presented by Orkin.” This is the second such show at the zoo. This time, there are 19 beasts representing 15 species, including many that roamed the Gulf Coast in prehistoric times. (We say beasts, but to be more accurate, they’re animatronic replicas. They move, growl and spit water thanks to sophisticated robotics inside the bodies.)

If you’re looking for giants, there’s the massive sauropod Brachiosaurus, possibly a close cousin to our own state dinosaur, the Paluxysaurus. At 85 feet long, the Brachiosaurus was among the largest animals to ever live, and perhaps the tallest, as it held its long neck vertically. Jurassic Park fans might lament the exclusion of the modern favorite, the Velociraptor, but the fear factor is covered by an exhibit of the similar, and larger, Deinonychus killing a young Triceratops. 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. daily. Through September 3. 6200 Hermann Park Drive. For information, call 713-533-6500 or visit www.houstonzoo.org.

Price: $3 with regular paid zoo admission

Drawings By Rembrant May 9th, 2012

Though he’s best known for his oil paintings including portraiture, historical scenes and the occasional Jesus, 17th-century Dutch painting master Rembrandt van Rijn also worked in chalk and ink. It’s those works that will be on view in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston exhibit “Drawings by Rembrandt, His Students, and Circle from the Maida and George Abrams Collection,” which includes nine works by the master, and more than 50 by his students and followers, assembled by the Abramses over five decades.

“The Abrams collection is one of the finest private collections in the world,” says Dena Woodall, MFAH Assistant Curator of Paintings and Drawings, adding that Rembrandt “was one of the greatest draftsmen and printers of all time, keenly observing everyday life around him.” Besides the chance to see Rembrandt’s work, the show’s an opportunity to observe Rembrandt’s role as an art teacher and his influence on the accompanying work of his students. Many of these drawings have never been seen or published before. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today; the exhibit runs through July 8. 5601 Main. For information and a full schedule, call 713-639-7300 or visit www.mfah.org. — By Bob Ruggiero

You get what you pay for!

From time to time I get a chance to work as a temp (helping with leasing and general office duties) at area Apartment Communities.  Monday I was at Windsor At Siena and wow what a place.  I was really impressed.  It is a higher priced community, but well worth it.  One bedrooms start at about $1175.00.  The only down side is the lack of availability.  They only have a few available and they are all one bedrooms.  Some of the amenieties; roof top cabana with outside gas grill, fireplace and a wonderful sitting area.  They have one of the coolest fitness centers with a wall of glass from which you get a great view of the Downtown Skyline.  If you are interested in knowing more about this community or others near Downtown Houston please give me a call at 281-819-0329 or www.theapartmentauthority.com
